What is constipation?
Constipation is hard to define. In some cases, constipation is a symptom of a more serious disease. In others, constipation is a condition in and of itself. In surveys, doctors defined constipation as the absence of bowel movements for more than three days. Patients, on the other hand, reported constipation as any number of symptoms from having hard stools to difficulty passing stools. The American Gastroenterological Association defines constipation as having any one of the following constipation symptoms:
- infrequent or hard stools
- difficulty passing stools
- pain during a bowel movement
- inability to pass stool after straining or pushing for ten minutes or more
- the absence of bowel movements for more than 3 days
