What are the symptoms of constipation?

Other than the symptoms of constipation that are also part of the definition of constipation (infrequent or hard stools, difficulty passing stools, pain during a bowel movement, inability to pass stool after straining or pushing for ten minutes or more, and the absence of bowel movements for more than 3 days) the more serious symptoms of constipation are:
  • abdominal distention or bloating
  • abdominal pain
  • loss of appetite (anorexia)
  • weight loss
  • bloody feces (hematochezia)
  • extreme urge to defecate (tenesmus)
  • presence of flatus or grease (extremely runny, greasy diarrhea that causes the soiling of undergarments with clay-colored stool)
The presence of any of the more serious symptoms of constipation requires medical attention.
