What are the symptoms of constipation?
Other than the symptoms of constipation that are also part of the definition of constipation (infrequent or hard stools, difficulty passing stools, pain during a bowel movement, inability to pass stool after straining or pushing for ten minutes or more, and the absence of bowel movements for more than 3 days) the more serious symptoms of constipation are:
- abdominal distention or bloating
- abdominal pain
- loss of appetite (anorexia)
- weight loss
- bloody feces (hematochezia)
- extreme urge to defecate (tenesmus)
- presence of flatus or grease (extremely runny, greasy diarrhea that causes the soiling of undergarments with clay-colored stool)
The presence of any of the more serious symptoms of constipation requires medical attention.
